Hot and humid weather is upon us. It is important to understand that this weather can affect the body in a number of ways. Apart from sunburn, heat exhaustion and heat stroke are two of the more serious ailments. The elderly are particularly vulnerable to these conditions, especially those with other medical issues and those who take medications.
Ways in which to avoid heat exhaustion and other heat-related disorders:
- Avoid exertion and strenuous activity on hot and humid days
- Drink plenty of water or diluted fruit juices – avoid caffeine and alcoholic beverages.
- Keep all rooms well ventilated with the use of a fan, air conditioner, or open windows. Close blinds and use awnings if possible to block the sun’s direct rays.
- Avoid the midday heat. Complete errands during the cooler morning or evening hours.
- Wear light-colored, lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and a hat outdoors. Don’t forget to apply SPF or higher sunscreen.
- Rest in air-conditioned areas such as public pools or air-conditioned public libraries, stores or malls.
- Cool down with baths or showers.
Please remember that the isolated and disabled seniors are at greater risk of heat-related illnesses. Don’t forget to contact those relatives, friends or neighbors most vulnerable in person or by phone at least twice a day.
